Unfitting

I often find myself drifting into the past,
To our once upon a time without the happy ending.
To when it was you and I and not you, and I.
To when we were a complete whole,
And to when we thought this us would last.
I remember the way your eyes used to linger,
As if committing my every expression to memory.
I remember the way you used to wrap your arms around me and laugh a little,
And I'd grumble and yet still smile and open my arms wide, Because we used to fit like lock and key, perfectly.
You used to make my world spin,
My axis, tilt insanely.
But in the end, you've only uprooted me,
And now I find myself floating in the void, endlessly.
Still, I wouldn't ask to rewrite our story
Because without you,
Then I wouldn't know the true meaning behind
'I'm Sorry, I love you, But we just aren't meant to be'
